We have developed a platform for the creation of online quizzes for the BBC. QuizMaster allows the BBC to rapidly develop and deploy multiple-choice quiz games on the web and on mobiles. Using QuizMaster, games can be published in a variety of formats using Flash, Ajax for web, Ajax for mobile phones and J2ME for mobile phones. QuizMaster quizzes are designed to be as accessible as possible and are compatible with two button navigation and text-to-speech software.
The QuizMaster platform makes use of several key BBC technologies including their Embedded Media Player, the Akamai content delivery network and their user sign in and authentication system, BBC ID.
Quizmaster allows content editors to manage existing quizzes and create new ones. It's administrative system allows content owners to add new questions and manage existing ones, manage the score tables and change quiz formats. It allows users to dynamically build new J2ME versions of their quizzes and instantly deploy new quizzes as Facebook applications.
In order to accomodate multiple brand identities, the platform uses quiz skin files that can easily be created by graphic designers and front end developers. Presenting the quiz on a web page is a simple as copying an HTML code from the QuizMaster administrative application and pasting it into a web page.
Due to the high traffic nature of the BBC web site and taking into the account the inevitable spikes in traffic that on-air announcements cause, the platform is built with scalability in mind, making use of modern caching techniques and internally employing restful service layers.
The first BBC quiz to be developed with QuizMaster is Ken Bruce's PopMaster which launched on the BBC Radio 2 web site, on Facebook and on a variety of mobile platforms.
