BBC
We developed a platform for the creation of online quizzes at the BBC.
A quiz for 5 live that challenges players’ world cup football knowledge.
A quiz the BBC that celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Glastonbury festival.
We helped develop a travel vaccination Facebook application for MyVaccs
We worked on the architecture, design, & production of a secure ‘friend to friend’ file-sharing product called OnShare.
We worked with The Police Service Of Northern Ireland & Large on a community site for teenagers.
Working closely with the BBC, we developed the new Radio 1 & 1Xtra homepages. The project represents a total reinvention of the way Radio 1 presents itself online by visualising what's happening on air as soon as it happens. The new sites are not a traditional archive of editorial content, they are a place to experience, enhance and interact with live radio as part of a simultaneous web broadcast.
"There is no longer a radio station and a website, they are one and the same." - Chris Johnson, Senior Producer, Radio 1 Interactive.
The new homepages are all about 'Liveness'. As soon as a track is played out, users see that track appear on the homepage and can click to find out more information about the artist and song. If the cameras are on, live video will appear on the page and users can start streaming instantly. Photos, videos and audio clips can be put up as soon as a DJ mentions them on air. Sessions and exclusive tracks from artists in the studio can be shared when mentioned in interviews. All this immediacy is powered by push technology that means content changes and appears as soon as it happens without users having to refresh the page.
Powering this content is an extensive new administration and content management system that Kite designed and built on the BBC's Platform. This system allows Interactive Producers working alongside the Programme Producers to simultaneously broadcast their own content, posting photos from the studio, audio and video clips, promotions, competitions and user comments in sync with the on-air broadcast.
Content can be scheduled ahead of time to appear on the page when required - particularly useful for overnight shows. Promotions and the best archive content can also be displayed on demand and Live Video can be turned on and off, immediately appearing for users when something interesting is happening.
The new homepage also allows users to tell Radio 1 & 1Xtra what they love by clicking the little heart that appears on items of content on the homepages. We developed a recommendations engine which suggests content that users might like to see, based on the things they've loved. It's a great way to introduce users to the wealth of amazing, exclusive content that Radio 1 and 1Xtra have built up over the years. We integrate with BBC iD to enable this system and we also allow users to keep track of their favourite DJs in one customised panel.
Built upon the BBC's infrastructure, we engineered a wide range of technologies to enable this project from XMPP Push services and Java based Restful APIs to HTML 5 client-side code. The homepage integrates with APIs from many other services including the BBC's music and social platforms.
The Radio 1 & 1 Xtra homepages have so far been nominated for Website Of The Year and awarded a 5 out of 5 by Web User magazine.
We're very proud of our work on this project and it represents a huge undertaking for Kite. Working with BBC designers, developers and producers we feel we've changed the way Radio 1 & 1Xtra take advantage of the web in a fundamental way. It doesn't stop here though. The BBC and Kite have got lots more improvements planned. Keep watching (and listening)...
